Photo Theme #75: Mirror

This is a part of the 100 Themes project (read more about it in this post), and it’s the first photo with a theme from the list. I decided not to do them in order by numbers, but rather in order of inspiration, hence I’m starting this off with number 75. I will collect all of the pictures on this page (link up in the header), but of course, so far, it’s only the one. Here we go.

“A mirror is an object with at least one reflective surface. The most familiar type of mirror is the plane mirror, which has a flat surface. Curved mirrors are also used, to produce magnified or diminished images or focus light or simply distort the reflected image.”

– Wikipedia

I decided to interpret this theme rather as the thing it was, instead of going overboard with some sort of deeper deconstruction of the word and all it’s possible metaphors. I wanted to get started, after all, and it’s supposed to be a fun and simple project to get your creativity going.

So, I needed an actual mirror or a reflective object, and Jed, who works a lot with 3D models and lights and shadows, gave me idea of photographing a sphere.

What I like about this photo in the end is the fact that it is sort of a self-portrait; what is reflected in the sphere (yeah, a plastic x-mas decoration) is me standing in the neighbourhood where I’ve lived for 13 years now (actually it’s exactly 13 years this month). The houses in the background were built in the 1940’s, and were built as service apartments for those working in the Ericsson main factory.

Also: SNOW. We’ve had a harsh winter this year, and it was even worse last year, and it feels like it will never end. And this might be the one small metaphor I’m willing to ascribe this picture.

  1. So you actually live in the same area where I worked (and walked) for a number of years – we moved out of there less than 2 years ago. Interesting.

Nice! This image gave me lots of ideas about what I would like to do with a camera and some shiny spheres. As you may have noticed, I’m quite fond of reflections. :)

Hm. There is an interesting spherical thing at Sergels Torg – inside (or outside, depending on your perspective) the railing on the Kulturhuset side of Plattan. Last time I visited it was dark and raining, so it might be worth going back there to see what reflections it’ll give under other circumstances.

Your sphere actually reminds me of a chrystal ball and I think the snow looks a lot like sugar. Sweet! Were you photographing your past or your future? :)

    1. That’s so cool! Yeah, just between T-plan and Kransen =) I love the area, but the apartments are freezing in the winter, and, you know, 13 years of memories and heart aches… So I hope I was photographing my past :)

I like reflections too! :) I don’t know why I find them interesting, doesn’t even have to be reflecting my own pretty face (harr harr), I just think it makes an interesting perspective.

Good tip about the sphere at Sergels! I’m always on the look-out. I like round shapes. Oh, if you can’t find a nice plastic x-mas bauble :P google for “gazing orbs”
